YOSEF ben ? -> CHAIM ben Yosef -> MOSHE ben CHAIM

These are the children of MOSHE ben Chaim and his first wife (name unknown) and his second wife (Rala), all of whom were born in Germany and some of whom emigrated to the United States; this list includes my great grandfather, Gershon:

+HANNAH SARAH BUNTMAN b. December, 1842 Hannah Sarah was the firstborn of MOSHE and (unknown name) children.She married Moshe/MAURICE LAVIN n in 1862 or 1863, Hanna and Maurice Lavin had five children, all born in Kaunas, Lithuania, and they all immigrated together to the United States, settling in Bridgeton, New Jersey. Their children were:

  • HYMAN (Harry). Harry was born in Kaunas and lived in Bridgeton NJ with his family. As an adult, he was a tailor. In 1910, he was a buttonhole-maker. He m. Anna nee ?, Their children were: Jacob, Louis, Minnie, Lottie, Bessie, and Mannie. Harry Lavin died in 1921, in Philadelphia.
  • CHARLES MAURICE Charles Maurice Lavin b. July 10, 1864, in Germany, He immigrated to the U.S.A. in (year>). There, in 1886 he married Rachael (Ray) Fishlader in Camden, New Jersey. They had seven children in 11 years. In 1900, Charles, known as C.M. Lavin, opened an account with the Rosenbaum Bank for his first cousin, his mother’s nephew (and my grand-father) Laser Buntman, to travel (immigrate) from Germany to Philadelphia, PA. Laser became an important part of the Lavin Shoppes, the Lavin family. and the Buntman family, his nephews from his mother Hanna nee Buntman. Charles M. Lavin died on January 30, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 64. Rachel (nee Fishleader) Lavin d. 1943.
  • BERTHA b. 1869, in Kaunas, Lithuania. After she emigrated to the U.S., she m. Harry Schmidt; they lived in Abington, PA.
  • PEREL (Pauline) “Paulie.” Pauline m. Harry Kolsky in 1895. Harry and Pauline also hosted their niece Minnie Buntman, age 22, and Harry’s cousin newly immigrated from Germany, Aaron Buntman.
  • ABE S. b. 1873. Abe m. Rose Greenhouse. Abe Lavin opened the Lavin Shoppes, in Bridgeton, N.J. NEXT GENs: Abe and Rose had three daughters: Lillian, Florence and Ruth. Florence m. Sidney Berger, and died in 1925, at a young age, after a miscarriage after which she developed sepsis. Laser, my grandfather, named his newborn daughter, Florence Buntman, who would become my mother, in Florence Lavin Berger‘s memory.

+RIVKA BUNTMAN b. 1859 RIVKA m. BORUCH BRAND in Jelgrava, Latvia. They had a son, Benjamin, who immigrated to the USA, to Philadelphia, PA.

+RACHEL BUNTMAN/BUNTING b. 1861 Rachel firsts emigrated to the United Kingdom, where she met and had m. BARNETT RENDELMAN by 1884. They lived at 5 Frostic Place, Mile End New Town, Whitechapel, Middlesex, U.K.. Their son ISAAC SOLOMON (Charles Solomon) (Sully) was born there in 1885. Their daughter EDITH (ITA) was born in London in 1886. Shortly afterward. the family emigrated to the United States, arriving at Port 53 in Philadelphia. Their son ABRAHAM was born in Philadelphia in 1889. Rachel’s husband, Barnett died in Philadelphia on October 23,1897 and is buried at the Gladwyne Jewish Memorial Cemetery, NEXT GENs: Isaac Solomon (Sully), Edith (Ita), m BARNEY LAVIN; Abraham (Abe) m. Anna Luks.

+TAUBA BUNTMAN b. 1865 Lived in Koenigsberg. She and her husband CHAIM LEIB (Louis) URITSKY immigrated together; they arrived in the U.S.A. through the Port of Baltimore in 1908, indicating that the closest person to them in the USA was Charles M Lavin, Taube’s cousin, the son of her aunt Hanna née Buntman, wife of Morris Lavin, in Bridgeport NJ. Taube and Chaim settled in Philadelphia. Taube died in 1936. The Lavins remained close to Chaim, who died 8 Feb 1924 at Lankenau Hospital, just outside of Philadelphia, in Merion, Pennsylvania, USA

+MINNIE BUNTMAN/BUNTING b. 1878. Minnie emigrated to the USA btwn 1892-1894, After she arrived in the USA, Minnie Buntman, now age 22, lived in Philadelphia at 203 Wood St. with Harry and Pauline (nee Lavin) Kolsky and their children Minnie (age) 4, Benjamin (age 2), and Solomon ( 10 months), she she can be found living in the 1900 census. She changed her surname to BUNTING. Mina m. JACOB BRITZ. Their two children, see below, were born there. Then the family moved to Beach Haven, New Jersey. Minnie d. 1935. She’s buried at Har Yehuda Cemetery, in Upper Darby, PA. Their NEXT GENs:

+ALBERT SAMUEL BUNTMAN b. 1882. Albert m. Hattie nee Rubins in New York City, NY, in 1911. Albert d. 1962 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

These are the children of Gershon who emigrated to the United States:

  • My grandfather LASER (Louis) Harold BUNTMAN

+LASER (Louis) Harold Buntman was my grandfather, my mother’s father. Laser (Louis) Harold Buntman was naturalized in 1912.   • My grandfather’s brother AARON ORKA BUNTMAN . After immigrating, Aaron stayed with his aunt Hanna and uncle, C. Lavin, in at N 6th St in Philadelphia.  Later, he was living with the family of Harry and Pauleen (nee Lavin) Kolsky. By 1917, Aron, now living at 2156 North 12th St Philadelphia, registered for the draft for WW1. In 1918 he petitioned for naturalization. For a time he was living with his uncle, Charles M Lavin on Green Street as a salesman and employed at 720 Market Street, Philadelphia.  In 1920: Aaron O. Buntman was living at 1735 Diamond St. 

Aaron and GERTRUDE LANARD became engaged, the public announcement published in the Evening Public Ledger of Saturday, November 18, 1922.

Aaron and “Gertie” lived at 3211 Page St., Philadelphia, east of Fairmount Park, in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.  Throughout his marriage, AARON and his bride Gertie remained close with his brother Laser and sister-in-law Goldie and their two daughters.

Aaron died on July 4, 1939 from appendicitis. He was buried in the Roosevelt Cemetery in Trevose. Laser and Goldie Buntman and their daughters Florence and Joyce remained close with their sister-in-law and aunt, Gertie.

Gertie Buntman became the Recording Secretary for Benjamin Franklin Battalion (111th Infantry Regiment) of the Pennsylvania National Guard. She died in 1979.

My grandfather’s brother SOLOMON (Sälly) (1888-1976), Please click HERE to begin with Sally’s early life in Germany.

Sälly became a dentist; on March 31, 1927 married Lizzi Schneeberg in Berlin.(We have no further information about Lizzi.)

Solly got out of Germany before WWII.

Solly emigrated to Hertzelia, Israel, which was newly founded.

Subsequently, he lived in Europe.

In the 1962, Solly immigrated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles.

At some point Solly married Miriam (last name unknown)...  Sally’s son was Werner, who played professional tennis. NEXT GENs: Werner m. Gisela nee Lieble.  Their children were Gary (b. 1959) and Scott (1963 – 2018). 


YOSEF ben ? –> CHAIM ben Yosef –> YITZCHAK ben CHAIM

This is the family and descendants of Moshe ben Chaim’s brother, Yitzchak.

YITZCHAK (Isaac) m. FANIA JOSEPHS in 1930 and they had eight children:

  • HYMAN immigrated to the USA and settled in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He m. Eunice nee ?. NEXT GENs: See below.
  • ESTHER m. Benjamin Kanter.
  • REBECCA m. ?Shlomonowitz. No further information.
  • FANNY immigrated to the USA and settled in New Castle, PA. She m. Cohen. No further currently information.
  • JOSEPH b.1832 Klaipėda, (Memil), Prussia. On Feb. 22, 1886, Joseph Buntmann, He m. Esther Lena Tobiansky (Bronsky), from Kretinga and was in the fruit business. He immigrated first to Marienette, Wisconsin and she later, in 1887, with 4 young children: Bertha, Eva, Lenny and Harry. In Marienette, they had two more children. NEXT GENs: Herman b. 1861, Samuel b. 1867, Bertha b. 1872, Chana b. 1872, Eva b. 1877, Fanny b. 1878, and Harry b. 1884.
  • MENDEL ARON b. 1845 Russia He immigrated to the USA and settled in New Castle, PA. Mendel Aaron d. 1917.
  • CHANA SARAH (Anna Sarah) b. Russia. Chana Sara immigrated to the USA and settled in New Castle, PA.
  • MEIR MOSHE b. Nov. 15, 1855 Kretinga. MOSHE married LENA (Helen) Rubenstein. Moshe and Lena immigrated to the United Kingdom (Scotland then Ireland, then Wales), where their five children were born. By 1925,, he and Lena had immigrated to the United States, settling in New Castle, Pennsylvania.
