We can trace the Tanur family back to two branches, both in Lithuania:

  • WULF Tanur, born in 1770, and
  • YEHOSHUA ben ABRAHAM Tanur, born in 1779, and his wife.

We do not know how Wulf and Yehoshusa were related, that is, no official documents indicate Wulf ben Abraham, but it is likely they were brothers. The surname “Tanur” is a Hebrew word meaning an oven. (See References to Tanur.) We may imagine the scenario that an ancestor, possibly Abraham, was a baker, and one of these two brothers, Wulf, remained in Seredzius while Yehoshua set off to start a business in Raseinai, a distance of 41m (42.8 km) between these villages.

WULF TANUR

WULF TANUR and his wife (name unknown) had a known son: ZELMAN*, who married CHAYA, (maiden name unknown), b. 1796, in Seredzius, Lithuania.

  • Pesha Heina b. 1838 in Seredzius, Lithuania.
Pesha Heina m. Hirsh Burshteyn, who was born in Vilkja, Kaunas, Lithuania. Pesha and Hirsh started a family in Seredzius, Lithuania, and in (year?) together with their children emigrated to New York, New York.
