IDA (CHANA HENYA) my grandmother.

1892 – April 24, 1930. She arrived in the U.S. through the port of Philadelphia at the age of 18 on July 12, 1910. Her aunt Fanny (nee Tanur) Block, who was at the time living in Cleveland Ohio, was there to greet her.

We believe Ida went to live with her uncle Hyman (Yehoshua) Tanur, in Expedit, PA

She stayed only a short while and went to live in Philadelphia with her uncle Jacob Sporkin, and aunt Lena nee Meyers , sister of her mother. That’s where she was living when she met Joseph Boris, my grandfather. The applied to marry Joseph Boris (my grandfather) on June 28, 1912. They had three children (See “next gens”.

Ida died in Philadelphia, 1930, shortly after childbirth and is buried in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Collingsdale, PA.     SARAH CHASIA

    (March 1896 – 1984 ): (My aunt) Sarah arrived through Ellis Island in 1920. She went to live with her uncle Jacob Sporkin (whose wife, Leah nee Meyers, was mother’s sister) on North Broad St., in Philadelphia. 

    Sarah m. Abe King (ben David King and Milly Singer). She lived in West Philadelphia (Hazel Ave., then South Salford St.). Sarah and Abe King settled in San Francisco, CA. Sarah died in -(?) For NEXT GENs,

    Sarah and Abe King had one daughter, Toby.

      TANURS in CLEVELAND, OHIO

      YITZCHAK emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio.  He anglicized his name to ALBERT TENER. Yitzchak m. Chava (Eva) nee Seten. Albert died in 1969. See their children, below:

      • PHILIP Philip was a bomber in WWII. Philip married JOAN MORGENSTERN. Their children are CLAIR (RIP) and BERRI (RIP). CLAIR married DENNIS. More more information, click here.

      Chava (Eva) Seten TANUR

      ROCHAL b. 1894 emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio (re: Ari). She anglicized her name to Ethel. She married Frank Schane) on Oct. 15, 1922. No further information is available at this time.


      TANURS in CINCINNATI, OHIO

      These are the children who traveled with IDA (nee Tanur) and SCHMUEL DAVID MARK:

      As a family, after arriving at Ellis Island, SCHMUEL DAVID and IDA made their way to Cincinnati, Ohio. In Cincinnati, Schmuel David and Ida nee Tanur Mark had two more children:

      • PEARL (1908–1968)
      • JEANETTE  (1910–2011)

      Ida Mark was the “Aunt Ida Mark” mentioned in the Lithuanian cookbook. Ida Tanur Mark died in Ohio Nov. 26, 1947. Descendants are Reuven and Arlene Mark in CT. please contact us if you have any information.

      TANURS in NEW YORK CITY

      Joseph and Yohanna (nee Waller) Tanur moved their family from Skuodos Lithuania to Kaunas, Lithuania, where Yosef ran a candy and soap factory.  Two of his children, sons Samuel and Mauritz, both immigrated to the U.S. See below.       • SAMUEL (1893 – 1970), Sam emigrated to the U.S. at age 17, arriving on June 20, 1910. He changed the spelling of his last name to “Tanner“.  Sam m. Fanny (Fay) nee TenenbaumNEXT GENs: Samuel & Fay’s children are David and Joan.   Joan m. Edward Katine in 1963. David d. 5 Jul 1993.
      • MICHAEL (“MAURITZ”) (July 15, 1895 (Skuodas). Michael studied in the Tartu university in Riga, Latvia. Michael m. Edith Millie Balschowski, from Nesterov, Kalinograd, Germany. NEXT GEN: Their son MICHAEL ISAAC was born in 1933 in Koenigsberg, Germany. The family left Germany and emigrated to New York in 1939, where brother Samuel was living. Michael married JUDITH MARK. Their children: RACHEL (RIP 3/15/58 – 2/10/02) and MARCIA b. 1959. Marcia m. Victoria Guarfolino. Their children are Emma Chung Guarfolino-Tanur and Max Jorge Guarfolino-Tanur. Marcia Tanur RIP 1959-1922) .

        Fanya & Leon emigrated from Berlin to NYC in July, 1930, with children Norbert and Roman (b. Berlin, 1934-1999); Son Jonathan was born in the US.
